Writing About Love

I know I’ve shared this before, about the time I was asked for a ‘Love Poem’.

With all the poems I’d written… and poetry books I’ve published, I just knew I had something lovey-dovey in my stash. I was sure of it… until I got to searching and couldn’t find an iota of anything remotely resembling the love I thought was being sought.

“Well, just give us something,” was what ended up happening.

So I sent a few poems,  (in my mind) as polar opposite to love as light is to night. The incident however, did nudge me to really think about writing about love. After all, I’m a real sucker for them HEAs. And R&B LOVE ballads? Oh my goodness!!! I can lay beneath some ‘Adore’…and ‘Before I Let You Go’ …and ‘Mr. Too Damn Good’…and so, so many others, OVER and OVER, repeatedly, all night long.

But writing the love stuff? I've tried and it is a struggle. Yet, here’s the thing! That poem I turned over, well I’ll be darn if months... maybe a year or two passed... when I happened to be watching a short movie, nodding and sort of vibing along, having forgotten about that long ago request when I suddenly said to myself, ‘Hey, I heard these words before.’ So I paused. Then frowned...and squinted. “Wait a minute," I gasped. "Those are MY words!”

That’s when it dawned on me. This was my poem! Honest to goodness, hearing that poem recited to music was simply beautiful. All these years gone by and I’m still in awe. I would've never believed it had I not heard it myself.

All that pontificated, I am no songbook! And especially not a love lyricist. I have no problem leaving that lane open to the specialists, like Kem, whose memoir 'Share My Life' I just finished reading. (My Thoughts Here).

APRIL STILL IS POETRY MONTH.
