“The Way WE See It”

Few truths land like seeing “proof” in puddings. Seriously. Like how easy would life be if proof just showed up in pudding?? Silly maybe, but this jest was doled out…generously… and perhaps few, (like myself), bothered to ask for clarification. Sounded a lot like something “we” were supposed to “just get the point”.

Interestingly enough however, as time moved along “getting points” like the above jest stopped landing as much. For instance, I’m thinking about the ‘dancing gorilla’ video. In one of these therapeutic classes I involved myself in, participants were instructed to watch the video closely… to count the number of times a ball passed from one person to another.

For the record, for those who haven’t seen the video, the ball was passed something like *17* times! And for those who counted this high, we celebrated…prematurely albeit… as we missed the real lesson of this exercise. Yeah, the astute missed seeing a gorilla dancing in the dead center of this video. Like WT-!*$#! How had I missed seeing something so obvious!? As a matter of fact… and full disclosure…I couldn’t be convinced we hadn’t been deceived. I still believe there were two videos involved in this whole production.

And yet, the point was got. The video proved how we can be so focused on one thing, that we miss other things. It was like my husband insisting there was an arrow on FedEx trucks. We argued for months about this. I saw no arrow on any FedEx trucks, boxes or anything else with the FedEx name. Lo and behold I eventually saw the arrow. It’s located in the negative space between the E and x of FedEx. Someone pointed this out for me. Again, What The Font!

These exercises, or examples, may seem innocuous, but what we see…or the way we see is no misnomer. Reading memoirs (from beginning to end, front to back) helps me see the perspectives of others not readable or visible on the surface. Just finished reading; Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance. CONNIE by Connie Chung. And WILL by Will Smith. All Wonderful Memoirs!!! (Thoughts here, here, and here).
