What Makes A Leader?
One of the most interesting classes I sat in on was a marketing class where the professor was explaining leadership.
“Real leaders are born out of need,” she said after describing general characteristics many leaders shared in common; many physical. Tall. Male. Commanding voice…and I believe there may have been mention of vision, as in the ability to clearly articulate big picture goals that inspire others to help achieve.
“Umm,” I thought, really stuck on that “leaders are born out of need,” bit. I scrambled to remember names of leaders, their stories and surrounding facts leading to ‘their leadership’. In short order Dr. King came to mind, followed by some others in that time. But was King tall? Back then I didn’t know. All I knew was I hoped there would never be that kind of ‘need’ again.
In general, anyone can be a leader, perhaps decreasing 'urgent needs' for leaders. Whether in the home, at work, in business, community, church... those who inspire, educate, and goodness knows… entertain, they are needed everywhere.
At any rate, I just finished reading Carole Simpson’s memoir ‘NewsLady’, a surprising book to find, so fitting to share today. (Thoughts here).
Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., 365.
