My Biggest Confession

This is not going to be easy. So I decided to mix this post up, in a mish-mash effort that unburdens myself of a heavy weight, and get this month’s post up and out of the way. And I know, what a terrible thing to write, given how much blogging, writing and reading means to me. But it’s true…

…someone recently asked ‘how was I celebrating the 4th’, to which my response was a head scratching ‘the same way I’ve been celebrating it for the past six decades!’ Like, what is up with all the change, though change is great. Yay, I say! I should know.

I know for a fact traveling and living and working in so many culture zones, was my greatest and favorite education. Seriously. I can only imagine how limited my experiences …and thus knowledge would be had I worked for the same employer, or in  the same profession, and lived in the same state, or one country, seeing and dealing with the same people, who ALL agree with me, day in, day out. Hearing one point of view …eating the same kind of grapefruit …reading the same book, in comparison to what I now know, would’ve been like never leaving the house. Not even to grab the newspaper. For decades! But psst psst, it was a good thing I was young when I first left the house. Some of these experiences were not always for the faint of heart.

And yet, here’s the thing. For as much as I have learned over the years, and make no mistake about it, it has been a lot, but as of this late great date I did not know Maya Angelou had written more than one memoir. And it’s okay! I too needed a moment to stop spinning and stand up straight.

Maya is one of my greatest writing inspirations. That’s for starters. I still remember someone emphatically telling me she had, in fact, written many memoirs, a point I had the gall to argue. I thought those ‘other’ books were poetry books, which I loved her poetry, especially to hear her recite it.

Listen, I don’t know what inspired me to finally look into this matter but I just finished reading ‘Gather Together in My Name,’ (other thoughts here), and purchased the other books ‘I thought’ were poetry books. Gosh. Feeling crushed but inspired. I’m saying, umph! Umph! UMPH! All this time! And here’s the real thing! I READ MEMOIRS!!!
