Being Honest.

Honesty can be a complicated affair. In as far as book blogging and reviewing is concerned, if it’s not for being accused of giving away too much, then it’s giving the impression I’m looking for something …like maybe that electrification that energizes our superstars when they jump on stage and are pummeled by applause and adulation. Not quite sure if that would be me. Feels like the opposite is closer to my home base. The other month I caught an interview on C-SPAN where I had much to say in the way of praise but instead chickened out, making a note to see if this person had written a memoir. I didn’t find one but did catch another bit of inspiration a week or two thereafter that feels right up my alley to share. 

Generally I’m a big fan of TV cooking competitions. Kids Next Gen, Beat Bobby Flay, Supermarket Stakeout, Guy’s Grocery Games…fun family shows easy on the spirit are my jam. It’s funny too, when asked if I learned anything, as in discovering new techniques to really show out in MY kitchen. Laughing out loud. Nope. Not really. I’m too busy keyed into the hilarity factor, perhaps why high drama kitchen shows don’t sing for me. Well, that’s all except for Kitchen Undercover! 

When I first saw commercials announcing this new series, what tipped me towards giving the show a watch was Antonia Lofaso. Something about her on screen personality I like, starting from when I first saw her on Cutthroat Kitchen, and especially when I heard her explain (on Guy Fieri’s special, ‘Restaurant Hustle 2020’) how she was managing her restaurant(s) during the pandemic. Now, three episodes into Kitchen Undercover and I’m not only impressed, but inspired. That first episode got me, by the way she handled the situation with that lead employee, and overall in how she frames her tough-love talks to help young people care about their work and the service they are there to provide to their customers. I think what was most …let’s say… enriching, was the way the workers seemed motivated seeing the customers enjoying the food and service. And I know. It’s just TV. But the marrow of this reality program …and its core format is solid. The overall show is as informative and inspiring as it is engaging and entertaining.
