‘Putting a Spell on Readers’

In honor and cerebration of Women’s History Month this post…hence my heading…was inspired by ‘The Autobiography of Nina Simone—i put a Spell on you,’ with Stephen Cleary. (Thoughts on the book here).

Once upon a time it bothered me hearing book and reading influencers…such as teachers… referring to some writing as real literature, and other written work junk…or trash. If you weren’t reading non-fiction thick in pages on topics akin to business, technology, medicine, science and the likes, or fiction written by touted authors, you likely were reading in closets and certainly telling no one what you were reading.

Hand raised, I kept my reading penchants to myself—period…and not due to shame. Had I discovered memoirs back then my reading habits would’ve been exactly as  today. All non-fiction! Talking about books, a seemingly elite sport altogether, was of no interest to anyone I knew… teachers included. This being the case is what later solicited my attention when hearing some literature referred to as trash. Like goodness! Exactly who was doing the deep data dive to know the difference between the costly and the priceless? In other words, shame on the gatekeepers! All wise people know one person’s trash is another’s treasure.

Now I’m not about to draft a big bugaboo about the uncounted tenants of good and bad books. Obviously the person who hasn’t missed many meals will have a whole different perspective from those scavenging daily for meals, and even then some in the latter group might have much to say about yummy and yuck. And yet here’s the real point, aligning with devoting a whole month to acknowledging women…and many other groups while we’re here, castigating any group… be it person, place or thing… is born out of gatekeeping activities. Kind of fascinating, right?

Look, for anyone concerned about their art, writing and such… do your best, keeping in mind that even an audience of one—you best believe—is worth feeding. God is watching. The cream always rises to the top.

Much Love Ladies!!!
